Terminology

In general, the names of techniques are similarly constructed as follows:

- name of the weapon / part of body being used
- name of the target or target area at which the technique is being directed to AND/OR
- the motion or direction of the technique
- type of technique

For example chusoku chudan mae geri is constructed as follows:

chusoku / ball of the foot is the "weapon" / part of the body being used
chudan describes the level of the target (mid level)
mae; front describes the direction / location of the technique
geri; kick describes the type of technique

Often times the "weapon" may be omitted if it is already understood. For example jodan age uke may be used instead of SEIKEN jodan age uke as it is understood that the hand is in seiken (correct fist) position. Dropping the weapon name however may not work for other techniques as there are several possible weapons for a given technique.

TSUKI - thrust
UCHI - strike
GERI - kick
UKE - block

GEDAN - lower level
